1979 Marshall 2204 Master Model 50w

$2,700.00Price

This 1979 Marshall JMP 2204 is a premier example of the "Golden Era" of Marshall amplification. Representing the transition between the late-70s JMP aesthetic and the early-80s JCM800 series, this unit features a  desirable "hybrid" transformer set.

While most 1979 models moved toward higher plate voltages, this specific unit retains the legendary Drake 1202-164 power transformer (typical of early '70s 50w Marshalls) for a warmer, "browner" response, paired with an over-spec 1471-263 choke usually reserved for 100w models. The result is a 50-watt lead head with exceptional harmonic richness, classic British "bark," and a more stable, punchy power section. Whether dialed for Plexi-style edge-of-breakup or the searing master-volume crunch that defined hard rock, this 2204 Master Model is a versatile studio and stage powerhouse.

    • Transformer Integrity: Features  desirable factory "hybrid" transformer set, including the Drake 1202-164 power transformer for vintage early-70s sag and an over-spec 1471-263 choke for added stability.

    • Originality: The 784-139 output transformer is period-correct and provides the quintessential 2204 "bark."

    • Circuit Status: The PCB is clean and reflects the high-quality Marshall manufacturing of the late 70s.   Apart from replaced filter and bias caps and added screen limiting resistors, all original.  Less than 10 hours of play since last serviced.

    • Cosmetic Wear:  Tolex is worn and torn along edges, but not too bad.  Solid cabinet.

    • Performance: Fully tested and operational. This unit delivers a thick, harmonically rich distortion that is noticeably smoother than standard late-70s models due to the specific transformer configuration.
